Welcome to the Oil & Gas Inquirer (OGI) website.
OGI is committed to regional coverage that reflects the interests of those operating in the oil and gas industry. In our monthly magazine, we report the latest industry news from northeastern British Columbia to the East Coast of Canada and everywhere in between. We also zero in on the triumphs and challenges that drive today’s industry.
Head: New high-tech solutions help to keep lone workers safe
Working alone at remote sites is a reality for some oil patch workers. There are now high-tech solutions to ensure the safety of people working alone. A new device that is in its final stages of development and testing has a motion detector so if you haven’t moved for two minutes or whatever time you set, there is an alert. Read about the latest developments in work-alone safety solutions. It’s all in “The lone worker: Oilfield companies and producers taking action to avoid serious accidents and liability.”
There is much talk of a slowdown. But that’s not the experience for some companies in the Brooks and Taber areas in southern Alberta. Oilfield service companies reported in March that business was strong in the previous month. They added that it didn’t fall off as much as expected during spring breakup. A Taber firm that has been in business for 14 years says that it has never been busier. To learn more, read: “On the rise: Southern Alberta oilfield companies starting to see an upswing in activity.”
Fall protection for rig workers has come a long way. More levels of protective gear have been added over the years to ensure the safety of derrickhands who need to climb a rig to work on the monkeyboard to handle the upper drill string as it being hoisted out or lowered into the hole. There is also a new safety device out for a floorhand who has to be lifted up to do some maintenance. The tension limiter has been designed to ensure safety when a “non-man rated” winch system is used for that purpose. Find out more in “Stepping up fall protection: Better equipment, training, and regulation are reducing height hazards.”
All the best,
